It is an island located very close to Isla Mujeres. Since 1961 Isla Contoy has been protected by the Mexican government, its name comes from the Maya Kom “low or rehollado” and To oy (coat).

Isla Contoy is a National Park nature reserve that has one of the largest reefs in the world, with coastal dunes, and mangroves where 98 species of plants have been counted, it is a sanctuary for 152 species of tropical seabirds, with a variety of marine fauna and where only a certain number of visitors are allowed to enter each day.
